Last weekend I heard Simon Cowell(!) on a podcast talk about how he used to test a single track in a London club. He would just watch the room. Did people move? Did the energy shift? Did anyone care?

That idea stuck with me because runners do our own version of that. We test tracks all the time. A training plan that feels perfect on paper until mile six. A race that seemed like the right challenge until life detours your schedule or your knee decides to yell at you.

So you adjust. You slow down, switch workouts, pick a different race, or pause so your body can reset. You learn pretty quickly that being on the right track has nothing to do with always being right. It has everything to do with paying attention.

The part I keep coming back to is this. The right track usually gives you signals.

The quiet excitement. The steady progress. The feeling of growing into yourself. The wrong track sends signals too. The dread. The dragging. The sense that you are moving but not becoming who you want to be.

The trick is not confusing hard with wrong. Running uphill hurts, but it still gets you somewhere worthwhile.

Trying something new in work or life feels awkward at first, but that does not mean you are off course.

So here is the question I am sitting with.

Does this track move me closer to who I want to be? As a runner. At work. In life.

If yes, even if it is hard, keep going. If not, even if it feels comfortable, it might be time to switch.

Either choice counts as progress when you make it with intention.

Every year around this time, people start prepping their “New Year, New Me” speeches. 

Fresh planners. New running shoes. Big goals that somehow always begin on January 1… and never a day before.

And look—I get it. January feels official. Like there’s a starting gun.
But a few months ago, while the internet (and a whole lot of influencers) yelled: “Start your 2025 goals NOW so you’re ahead by January!”

…I went the other way. I paused. I breathed. I thought.

And I realized something: December—quiet, chaotic, cookie-filled December—might actually be the BEST month to start something big(ish). Especially when it comes to fitness and health.

Here’s why:

1️⃣ December slows you down just enough You naturally reflect. You notice what mattered this year… and what didn’t. That awareness is incredible fuel for a health reset.

2️⃣ Zero pressure, zero perfection No one expects you to start a training plan in December. Which means no comparison, no “new year, new me” noise. Just one small, doable step your January self will thank you for.

3️⃣ Small starts > big overhauls January pushes massive, unsustainable promises. December encourages tiny steps: A 10-minute run. A walk after dinner. One strength session. Tiny + doable = consistent. And consistent beats everything.

4️⃣ Discipline > motivation You don’t need inspiration. You need a rhythm you can return to—especially on cold, dark December mornings.

5️⃣ A 1º shift changes everything If a plane is 1º off course, it ends up miles from where it meant to go. Flip that: One tiny correction today can completely change your health trajectory next year.

One small action. One small shift. One 1% improvement. Do it most days and it adds up—December included.

And here’s the best part: You don’t have to start today. Start next week. Start mid-month. Start on the 28th if that’s what life gives you.

Just don’t wait for January to give you permission. 

December gives you a quiet, meaningful head start. Sometimes… that’s exactly how big things begin.

A haircut shouldn't have this much power over a person… but here we are.

For the past 18-ish months I’ve been in the wilderness, not of ultra running, but of finding a new hair person! My old stylist moved an hour away, and even I won’t drive that far for a haircut, though I once flew across country to run 81 miles for “fun.” Since then, it’s been 18 months of experiments. A few “meh” cuts.

One appointment where I waited 30 minutes even though I had an appointmnet, and I finally just had to leave. The entire shop froze like I’d violated a sacred ritual. (“He’s… just walking out??”) They offered me a comp’d haircut if I came back the next day. I did, and the haircut was… fine. Not bad. Not great. Just… hair.

A few months pass and I tried yet another new person, hyped by a friend as “the best” who would “solve all my problems.” Spoiler: she did not. (Unless my problem was having expectations.)

And that’s when it hit me: Haircuts are basically running. And life. And business.

Sometimes you’re flying.
Sometimes it’s average.
Sometimes you walk out wearing a hat.

The trick isn’t lowering your expectations, it’s staying flexible enough to keep trying. To show up again. To see what the next mile, or the next stylist, or the next idea brings. Because settling? That’s the real danger. That’s complacency, the “meh” mindset.

I don’t want to lower my standards for my runs, my work, or my life. And honestly, I don’t want to lower them for my hair either.

So I’ll keep experimenting. Keep chasing better. Keep believing the next attempt might surprise me.

Not perfection.
Just progress.

One haircut (or mile) at a time.
