As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m in the process of testing some new things. If you are anything like me, after 4-6+ hrs on my feet, I get tired of the same flavors, and having some options/variety is a good thing!
As I still have a few samples from the LMNT package I was given it’s time to report back on my latest test which was the LMNT Watermelon Salt flavor. It was an eye-opening experience, especially after my recent trial of the Tailwind's special collaboration flavor with Courtney Dauwalter, Dauwatermelon.
The Tailwind Experience
First, let's recall the “Dauwatermelon” flavor by Tailwind. Despite the successful composition and its effectiveness during my run, I found the flavor quite underwhelming. It was too light for my taste, lacking the punch I was hoping for. However, the product performed well, providing the necessary hydration and energy boost without any stomach issues.
The LMNT Experience
Switching gears to LMNT, my first sip of their Watermelon Salt flavor was a revelation. My immediate reaction was, “Wow, this is really watermelon!” The flavor was robust, with a salty kick that gave it an extra punch. It instantly reminded me of the watermelon-flavored Jolly Ranchers from my childhood – those nostalgic, tooth-breaking candies!
Sodium Content
It's important to highlight that LMNT packets are heavy in sodium, boasting a significant 1000mg per serving. Given this, I was cautious and chose to test it on a 2-hour run last week, especially considering the brutal humidity in North Carolina, which has been hovering around 95-98%.
The Real-World Test
Taking my friend Amanda's advice, I waited until the second hour of my run to start drinking the LMNT Watermelon Salt flavor. With my body craving salt due to my intense sweating, the flavor seemed less pronounced. This could either mean I'm getting used to the taste or that my body was so in need of sodium that it didn't register the flavor as strongly. Either way, I was pleased with the experience and can definitely see myself using this product in future races.
Final Thoughts
The LMNT Watermelon Salt flavor exceeded my expectations. The flavor was strong and enjoyable, a stark contrast to the mild Dauwatermelon flavor by Tailwind. The high sodium content is a crucial factor for long, sweaty runs, and LMNT delivered on that front. If you're looking for a hydration product with a bold flavor and essential electrolytes, I highly recommend giving LMNT Watermelon Salt a try.
Stay hydrated and keep running!
